The 2024 Mercedes-AMG SL-class is a luxurious and high-performance convertible that offers a captivating open-top driving experience. While the current-generation SL leans towards performance, it still manages to strike a balance with luxury. The estimated starting price for the SL43 is $111,000, while the SL55 is expected to start at $143,000. The range-topping SL63 is estimated to have a starting price of $185,000. All SL models come with a host of luxury features as standard, including massaging seats, a head-up display, and a Burmester stereo system. For those seeking maximum power, the SL63 is the recommended choice with its twin-turbo V8 engine. Additionally, the SL63 Performance specification offers a front axle lift feature and darkened exterior trim.
2024 Mercedes-AMG Engine, Transmission, and Performance
With the exception of the entry-level SL43, which is equipped with a 375-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine, the SL models feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine borrowed from the GT sports car. The SL55 produces a robust 469 horsepower, while the SL63 takes it up a notch with a staggering 577 horsepower. All SL models come with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The SL55 and SL63 also include all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, while the SL43 is rear-wheel drive only.
In terms of performance, the top-tier SL models can compete with convertible versions of the BMW 8-series and the Lexus LC, both of which offer powerful V8 engines. The SL63 has proven its capabilities on the track during Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap competition. However, some drivers may find the SL’s numerous selectable drive modes overwhelming, which can potentially detract from its overall focus. On the road, the SL delivers immediate and responsive acceleration, with the SL63 reaching 60 mph in just 3.0 seconds. The SL55 has EPA fuel economy estimates of 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The SL63’s estimates are slightly lower by 1 mpg in both categories. The BMW 8-series convertible and the Lexus LC with their V8 engines offer slightly better fuel efficiency than the SL. However, the SL43 leads the pack with estimates of 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Car and Driver’s highway fuel economy test will provide real-world data on the SL’s fuel efficiency.

Inside the SL, both the driver and passenger sit deep within the car, with the windows positioned high around shoulder level. The interior boasts luxurious leather surfaces with contrast stitching, complemented by turbine-like air vents for added style. The instrument cluster is screen-based, and most functions can be controlled through a large touchscreen in the center. However, some may find the over-reliance on touch controls, even for volume adjustments and raising or lowering the top, to be a bit inconvenient. The seats offer heating, cooling, and massage capabilities, along with integrated vents at the base of the headrests that provide warm air during colder weather (known as Mercedes’s Airscarf feature).
The SL’s rear seats are small and best suited for storing items rather than accommodating passengers. However, the limited passenger space is compensated by the small trunk’s storage capacity.
